Standard Procedures After a Work-Related Injury

1. If emergency, seek medical attention immediately from any Maine treatment facility available to you.

2. If not an emergency, inform your employer as soon as possible:

  • You may do so in person or in writing. The report should include the date and place of the accident and a brief description of the accident, injury, or disease.

  • You must notify your employer within 30 days of your injury. If you wait too long, it can delay the payment of benefits.

  • Once you notify your employer, he or she is obligated to give you a list of approved medical providers and inform the insurance company to begin the claims process.

  • While at the doctor, notify him that the injury is work related to ensure the doctor fills out proper paperwork.

3. Your employer must also file an Employer’s First Report of Occupational Injury or Disease within 7 days of being notified of your injury.
