If you are involved in an accident, knowing what to do may help alleviate some of the anxiety that an accident causes.

  1. Call for an ambulance if anyone is injured. It is not a good idea to try to treat the injured person yourself unless you have training in first aid.

  2. Exchange Information with the other drivers involved in the accident. Be sure to get their names and addresses and the names and identification numbers of their insurance companies. Ask to see driver's licenses, registrations and insurance cards. Make sure a police report has been filed and get a copy of it for your files.

  3. It is best not to have any discussion with the other parties. You may say something that is inaccurate which can be used against you in the future. Tell the police officer your version of the accident.

  4. Attempt to get the name, address and phone number of any witnesses to the accident.

  5. Be sure to go immediately to an emergency hospital if there are injured. Tell the doctor every complaint and injury you have, no matter how minor you may think it is. A serious internal injury may not show immediately.

  6. Notify your insurance company. If you fail to notify your insurance company immediately after the accident, they have the right to refuse to cover the claim.

  7. Contact IIH. We can refer you to a New York personal injury attorney who can answer questions about your legal rights. Do not wait – the best time to contact us in regards to a car accident is right after the accident occurred.
