Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is the final stage of HIV infection. Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) weakens a person’s ability to fight infections. HIV attacks and destroys a type of white blood cell called CD4. When the CD4 cells drop to a very low level, a person's ability to fight infection is lost. People with AIDS are susceptible to AIDS related infections and conditions. HIV is spread from person to person through infected blood or sexual fluids.
