ALD is a member of genetic diseases called leukodystrophies which cause damage to the protective covering (myelin sheath) that surrounds nerve fibers in your brain and spinal cord. When the myelin sheath is damaged, nerve impulses slow or even stop, causing neurological problems. There are three basic forms of ALD: childhood, adult-onset, and neonatal. Childhood ALD is the most severe and rapidly progressing and usually leads to permanent disability or death.
