Acidosis is a condition of having too much acid in the body. Acidosis occurs when acid builds up in the bodily fluids or bicarbonate (base) is lost. There are two types of acidosis: respiratory and metabolic. Respiratory acidosis is when there is a buildup of too much carbon dioxide (acid) in the body. Metabolic acidosis is when the kidneys cannot remove enough of the acid when there is too much built up in the body.
